Vision
“The Chair aims to deepen understanding of the dynamics driving the transformation of the healthcare system and to identify the conditions necessary for meaningful and sustainable innovation. By combining academic research with practical challenges, it helps inform stakeholders' decision-making and supports the transition toward a more integrated, patient-centered healthcare system underpinned by the responsible use of digital technologies.”
Loick Menvielle, PhD, Director of the Management in Innovative Health Chair, professor at EDHEC Business School and specialist in digital innovation and healthcare.
Reshaping the Healthcare Ecosystem and Value Creation
Connected health is profoundly transforming the healthcare system by redefining its value chain. This transformation is accompanied by the emergence of new stakeholders, many of them originating from the digital sector, who are reshaping established market dynamics and challenging traditional healthcare actors. At the same time, the success of this transformation relies on the growing adoption of digital technologies by patients, making it essential to better understand their behaviors, needs, and expectations.
The concept of value in healthcare is being enriched through the integration of new patient-centered indicators, such as Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs). These tools enable a better assessment of patients' health outcomes and lived experiences, while supporting the development of more personalized and preventive healthcare based on the effective use of health data.
Moreover, the integration of innovative tools such as mobile applications, connected devices, and collaborative platforms is fundamentally reshaping the interactions among the various stakeholders in the healthcare system, including patients, healthcare professionals, industry players, and technology companies. It is fostering the emergence of a more seamless, interconnected, and interdependent healthcare ecosystem.
The success of this transformation is not determined solely by the technologies themselves, but also by their adoption across all stakeholders in the healthcare system. Patients, healthcare professionals, and citizens remain at the heart of this change: while some use these tools to better manage their health, others face barriers such as digital illiteracy or concerns about data privacy. The future of digital health therefore depends on an inclusive, gradual, and user-centered approach that addresses the real needs of users and creates sustainable value for the entire healthcare system.
TWIN-X: Advancing Trustworthy AI for Patient-Centred Healthcare
The Management in Innovative Health Chair at EDHEC Business School is proud to participate in TWIN-X, a four-year European research project funded by the European Union that brings together 19 partners across 13 countries to advance the development of trustworthy digital twins for patient-centred medicine. The project aims to develop explainable and clinically meaningful AI solutions that support healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and oncological diseases by leveraging interoperable health data and digital twin technologies.
Within TWIN-X, the Chair contributes its expertise in the management and adoption of healthcare innovation. Our research focuses on the organizational, managerial, and human factors that influence the successful integration of digital health technologies into clinical practice. Beyond technological performance, we seek to understand the conditions under which AI-driven solutions generate tangible value for patients, healthcare professionals, and healthcare organizations, fostering trust, adoption, and sustainable transformation of healthcare systems.
Three Research Areas
Healthcare Value Chain and Strategic Perspective
The Chair examines how digital technologies are transforming the healthcare value chain by analyzing the organization, coordination, and value creation processes throughout the patient journey. Its research focuses on the interactions among healthcare professionals, industry stakeholders, and patients, as well as on the integration of digital technologies into healthcare delivery and production models, with the aim of identifying the strategic and operational drivers of this transformation.
Patient-Centered Healthcare Value
Another research focus centers on healthcare value from the patient's perspective. By leveraging indicators such as Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs), the Chair analyzes care pathways—particularly for chronic diseases—to optimize treatments, strengthen patient–provider communication, and enhance both the quality of care and the overall patient experience.
Technology Use, Adoption, and Organizational Challenges
The Chair also investigates the use and adoption of connected health technologies. Its objective is to understand the factors that promote patient empowerment and treatment adherence, while identifying barriers to adoption, such as digital illiteracy and concerns about data privacy, in order to ensure the effective and responsible integration of digital tools into everyday healthcare practice. Finally, the Chair also examines the organizational management of technology implementation, exploring how healthcare organizations can successfully deploy and integrate digital innovations into clinical practice.
